Also, regarding not even bothering about the cuffs: Has Ariane ever met Harry Houdini? Wouldn't surprise me, to be honest!

I did, at the time he made that sf-movies with the humanbrained robot and later again. But he was quite a gropey-gropey-creep!

Yes, it is said to be the first movie robot ever (although I am not really sure if it is. Still looking for earlier examples.) At least there are enough episodes of this serial left to follow the story. Most of them end with Houdini being tied up over an acid barrel, etc.
Sadly most Houdini serials are incomplete or lost (Houdine shares the fate with the other Harry, our german daredevil).
