I have no idea which movie you might be watching. I'm such a stick in the mud that if I were respectable I'd be ashamed to read this comic. It's entertaining even though I reckon I miss about 9/10 of the in jokes and references.
It is James Whale's "Frankenstein" from 1931 with Boris Karloff. It is not the first adaption of the story, but the most famous one, as it defined the monster in the way that is still imitated today and turned it into an iconic image also seen as toy, halloween decoration, ec.
